a visit to the island where mitt romney money les. 'll have a theai of lands for a little trip to talk it over. share your thoughts with us on facebook and on twitter using #edshow. we're right back. >>> welcome back to "the ed show." another video has surfed showg thalt ey "mother jones" has done it again. this time getting a video from bain and company by a former employee. sometimes they'll get you every time, won't they? the video celebrates the company's 25th anniversary. and includes footage from 1985 of romney talking about bain fedtal, tpiff cpora at the time, bain capital was relatively new and romney explains the company mission. >> bain capital is an investment partnership which was formed to invest in startup companies and ongoing companies. then to take an active hand in managing them and hopefully five to eight years later to harvest them at a significant profit. the fund was formed on september 30th of last year. it's been about ten months then. it was formed with million in investesh ior to "mother jones" obtaining it but the key phrase in the videotape is this. harvest

john elway. it was the only scheduled talk. it was a stealth bomber in the background there. romney tried to tamp down expectations in the back. >> people want to know who is going to win? who is going to score the punches and who is going to make the biggest difference in the arguments they make? in my view, it's not so much winning or losing or even the people themselves. it's about something bigger than that. these debates are an opportunity for each of us to describe the pathway forward for america that we would choose. >> playing off the enthusiastic crowd. romney had lines for the base. may even tested out a few zingers we might hear wednesday night. >> this is a home to focus on the family which is committed to preserving the foundation of america. we have to get the pipe laine from canada if i have to build it myself. >> it will kill america's entrepreneurship. >> that's the first time, by the way, romney talked about card check on the stump since the primaries. others call it the employee free choice act. it was a priority four years ago. it never passed because a few democ

with mitt romney. he's at the event talking a little bit about the message we heard from mitt romney. clearly it's important for him to reach the working class. that came in some of the comments he made regarding trade with china. what does he need to do? what does his team think they need to do to make sure he holds on to virginia? >> reporter: suzanne, as you know, all politics is local. virginia is a big military state. no surprise mitt romney would come to this crowd of veterans here to talk about defense issues. he talked a whole lot about president obama and the deal that was made with congress for sequestration cuts that would impact the defense department greatly. mitt romney said, if he were elected president, he would reverse those cuts. at a certain point during this speech, he talked about how he would actually add personnel to the united states military, not cut personnel. of course, that's going to raise the question where did that money come from? the romney campaign says all that is paid for. but you also heard mitt romney talk about the gd pfrnlts report that came ou

celebrates the company's 25th anniversary. and includes footage from 1985 of romney talking about bain capital, the spinoff corporation he founded. at the time, bain capital was relatively new and romney explains the company mission. >> bain capital is an investment partnership which was formed to invest in startup companies and. then to take an active hand in managing them and hopefully five to eight years later to harvest them at a significant profit. the fund was formed on september 30th of last year. it's been about ten months then. it was formed with $37 million in invested cash. >> editing of the video was done prior to "mother jones" obtaining it but the key phrase in the videotape is this. harvest them at a significant profit. now, this may be no big deal to private equity firms, but let's be very clear. romney basically is describing an economic model firmly rejected by the middle class of this country, because they are the ones who suffer. the people that lose their jobs to see them go overseas. that's an economic model. which throws workers to the wolves. romney has been gra

no connection between that mitt romney and this mitt romney. you've talked about the remarkable things he's done on wall street. what he di with bain capital, what a great american success d y as well, there's a huge disconnect between that mitt romney and the mitt romney that we're seeing bumblg around on the campaign trail. it seems that while presidential elections elevate some like reagan and clinton, they diminish others like mitt romney. o fundamentally kind of technocrats and businesspeople look at what he did in massachusetts and say he got a lot of stuff done, worked with the rest of the government, et cetera, et cetera, got health care done, this is how government should function,ut athat ppen outheel obvio cagnil tt he was pushed into places, into corners, into positions that he may or may not actually believe in, but which portray him and create an image of him in very, very different light. and so now we are left with this kindf bum eling candidate w isn't even really sure wtis sedut saying he wanted to repeal the bush tax cuts. then he had his own 20% tax rate cut with no way to

now and you mitt romney. we talked a lot about that red line whether the president is clear enough making a red line with iran. netanyahu publicly criticizing the administration for not doing that romney citing with netanyahu. take a listen to the family we met with last night who are supporting president obama. >> i think he has made it hard for the united states to keep israel with this special ally status that it's had because the united states can't be pushed around by anyone. i just think that obama is being very rational and reasonable to a bully right now. >> the president taking the iran threat seriously enough right now or does netanyahu have a point? >> he has built an international coalition. he has succeeded in buildi in i embargo against iran unprecedented. >> mitt romney said things like president obama has "thrown allies like israel under the bus." he also said on "60 minutes" over the weekend that the president made a mistake by not meeting with netanyahu. the next family we met with certainly agrees, says the president still has time to meet with netanyahu. here is

. one of the things they talked about, they said it in "the new york times," let's get mitt romney and paul ryan out on the road together because ryan seems to loosen him up a little bit. but then, you know, some people are making fun of what happened in ohio yesterday. let me play that clip for you. >> wow. that's quite a guy, isn't it? paul ryan. isn't that something? >> ryan! ryan! >> wait a second. romney, ryan. romney, ryan. romney, ryan. there you go. i guess the question becomes are people pushing him into something he's not? he got good interviews in. is the trouble in part when romney tries not to be romney? >> yeah, i think it's ironic that they're saying let ryan be ryan. but throughout then tire process, we've really not been 100% clear who mitt romney is, right, because the guy who was governor of massachusetts, had he run as that guy, he would have been more like the guy we saw on "60 minutes." he's been forced to run this eternal primary where he's constantly trying to please the farthest right base of the republican party and so he isn't really being allowed to make

, we talk about the 47% video, i'm hearing more and more people in the romney campaign as every day goes by, they understand more and more that they made a huge mistake with that libyan press conference. i'm not going to say that it was sort of that september 15th moment, the economy is sound, but john mccain last time, but i can't tell you how many pollsters are telling me that that was -- it made him look unpresidential. "the wall street journal" leading with their editorial today, "the libya debacle." the more we're finding out about benghazi, the more it looks like a gross security failure. and you know, something the romney campaign told me, this is the biggest mistake we made on libya. if you give the media a chance to talk about politics or policy, they'll talk about politics every time. and we get out in front of it, so all everybody talked about those first few days was the politics of it. but the policy looks, willie, more and more like a gross security failure. you've got so many warnings coming in and so many warnings that were ignored. now the administration, the lead o

. trying to minimize the impact of his own callous comments, romney has his own new ad out talking straight to the camera. >> too many americans are struggling to find work in today's economy. too many of those who are working are living paycheck to paycheck. more americans are living in poverty than when president obama took office, and 15 million more are on food stamps. my plan will create 12 million new jobs over the next four years. >> i'm sorry, that was actually a little poetic license by jimmy kimmel live. but now mr. romney really does care. just listen as he explained his compassionate side to nbc's ron mott last night. >> don't forget, i got everybody in my state insured, 100 b% of e kids in our state has health insurance. i don't think there's anything that shows more empathy and care about the people of this country than that kind of record. >> wow, what a great argument for defending the president a's affordable care act. romney went straight up onto the podium and told us what he really thinks of helping to cover the uninsured. >> obama care is really exhibit number one of th

weeks for 15 minute infomecials and talk about the choices between obama or romney and speak in serious venues. get away from the rallies and talk to, you know, the cincinnati chamber of commerce. he should be -- lou: excuse me? wait a minute, brad, with all do respect, that would be an electric moment in electoral history if he were to move to the chamber of commerce. i respect the judgment mightily, but that one -- >> he needs to speak to serious people at serious venues to talk policy. you don't get that across at a rally or across to the people in a 30 second sound bite. lou: the polls, do they agree on the strengths and weaknesses? do they reveal that? you talk about the seriousness of a moment in which it's captured for free media, but the reality is that there are strengths and weaknesses, it seems, at work here, otherwise, there would be, i suppose, an outright tie between the two. chris, are there stengths that are being revealed here? weaknesses revealed on all of the polls? >> yeah, here's something to keep very much in mind. here's how the electorat looks different in 2008 a

often hear president obama talking about lincoln, mitt romney talking about ronald reagan, and now "newsweek" is out with a list of the ten best presidents since 1900. sir harold evans w is author offaus "the american century" has a tribute. it's a ploesh to have you here. >> thank you, madam. >> you gaekted together ten distinguished historians. what was the criteria? >> the cteriasha k o active presidents were they. it's very interesting. the historians, all -- every single one of them chose franklin roosevelt as number one. >> why? >> best predent since theodore roosevelt in the beginning of the century. if you ask tm why he did th asivnd effective, those two things. and he had a sense of america's ideal of itself. so they took those creria. they didn't know what the others were doing. they all voted a it's interesting the top three -- around the table and discussing this. >> no, no. it was all in isolation. they locked them in a room with an ice pack and 5,000 volumes of their own works andsaid, come up with -- >> that doesn't soundike fu >> all othem, they pretty much agreed o

in the white house. >> we just got word actually that they're on the phone as we speak. mitt romney talking to benjamin netanyahu. telanovella. wow, maria, you want to respond to that? >> well, here's what i'll say. look, there has been a lot of hooplah around, you know, what has been done, what meetings the president is having, what meetings he isn't having, but i got to tell you, suzanne, from the standpoint of having been in some of these bilateral meetings, the pomp and circumstance that surrounds those kinds of meetings especially at places like the u.n., nothing of substance gets done. i actually prefer that our president is on the phone with prime minister netanyahu today. he was on the phone for an hour last week. he has been on the phone with other leaders from the middle east constantly throughout all of the chaos that is happening. that is much more important from a substantive standpoint than from any sort of perception standpoint of who he met or who he didn't meet, and we also saw the prime minister walk back his criticism. >> we got to leave it there. anna, maria, good to see

that -- he did sort of strike some military themes here at valley forge, talking about mitt romney, of course. he is trying to make the case that the best defense is a better economy tying national security to the economy, but one very interesting thing that happened here, suzanne, mitt romney at the very end of this speech here said he is going to win pennsylvania. he said that earlier. he said it again he is going to pennsylvani the polls -- or latest cnn poll of polls shows mitt romney down by ten points here. it would be a very tough uphill climb for h to win tstate. >> right. >> i think it's in the romney campaign's interest to expand the map, and i think that's what they're trying to do. >> john mccain didn't win pennsylvania the last go round either. ditheyhange in any significant way when they look at the demographics and they get some sort of optimism or confidence from that? >> well, you know, pat toomey, the pennsylvania senate repuan annnced m romney. he was able to wi t state, and even though he had some credentials, he was ahead of the ub forroh at one time, and so this is a sta

. romney is romney. mitt is mitt, and, you know, we knew there was -- that the field was weak. we talked about it all spring during the republican primaries, and the weak field, surprise, surprise, produced a pretty weak candidate. >> jonathan, when mitt romney went to london, one tabloid newspaper described hip as mitt the twit, but we're also hearing that romney may be the victim because the republican party has hewn so far to the right that it's simply impossible for him to win the base of his party and win independence within the electorate. is that fair? >> you know, i don't really think it is. i mean, i agree that the republican party has moved far from the right and it would have taxed any politician to get back to the center, but he was his own worst enemy during the primaries. he didn't have to go to the right of newt gingrich and rick perry on immigration to win that nomination. if he had come out and, you know, said that he was for the dream act sort of the way gingrich did, he still would have gone on to win the nomination and now he would be in a position -- >> you think so?

was totally unacceptable. >> of all the romney talking points this is the one they've been flogging the hardest of late. and the campaign saw a golden opportunity to drive the point home this week with the united nations general assembly meeting here in new york. with speeches by both the president and mr. netanyahu, this would be the perfect forum to showcase the enormous rift that republicans keep rooting for. but something funny happened on the way to turtle bay. take a listen. >> two days ago from this podium president obama reiterated that the threat of a nuclear armed iran cannot be contained. i very much appreciate the president's position, as does everyone in my country. >> that must have been a big hit with mr. romney's boston brain trust. all year long they have been mapping out the narrative on foreign policy, endless ll lly portraying the president as anti-israel. all they needed was a little third party cover and look what happened. unfortunately for poor mr. romney, it's only going to get worse as more people pick up on his oft repeated line and finally start calling i

. meanwhile we are talking about whether it's terrorism. romney is biting on it. it's irrelevant. four ambassadors are dead. planned. we know it. move on. >> greg: it's clearly not terrorism. self-esteem implosion. mandate disaster. the speech today, it was a foreign policy version of that warning that comes on a mattress label. you know, it's like we don't stand for this. but i'll tear it off anyway. first he says it's not about the video. then he says it's not about the video. you get a straighter response from silly straw. he did strike a careful balance between appeasement and apiecement. >> bob: eric's point is well taken. why does romney continue to bite -- >> dana: the administration is covering something up in past 12 days. let's listen to senator barassa who was on last night. >> i think the president is way offbase on this. i sit on the foreign relations committee. top secret briefing on what happened in libya. they're stone walling. >> dana: i don't think the administration does want us to talk about this. >> eric: how much of the vote will swing if it's terrorism or they kn

on the turmoil in the middle east. also, mitt romney talking aid, trade and more drilling down on foreign policy. we're going to hear what he's saying. and the news many homeowners have been waiting for years to hear. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> a brief break from the verbal sparring, the white house race. president obama stepped back in the global spotlight in new york today addressing the united nations assembly. he spoke at length about the turmoil in the middle east touting diplomacy and coalition building as the solution to the crisis to the region that's been vexing his administration. jessica yellin is traling with the president in new york. jessica, give us an update. what did the president say? >> reporter: wolf, when the president spoke here he had two major audiences, a global audience and a domestic audience. voters listening now to foreign policy issues with a new ear and a new eye after this violence in libya. and the president addressing it all just six weeks out from the election. at the united nations, president obama used the world stage to declare. >>

mitt romney is saying. he is saying iran is that close to going nuclear. he talks about syria and 20,000 dead in that ongoing conflict and the muslim brotherhood leading now in egypt. how is he handling this? >> well he is disingauged, well the president is disingauged. romney is pointing out a very concrete pattern on disingaugement on america's foreign policy. we're projecting weakness at a time we need to projecting strength. we're showing feebleness when we need to show resolve. i was amazed in the tick-tock on the call he made on the 12th of septem president that it was revealed that this was the first time the president had talk to the libyan president. i can't imagine that in this part of the world whether a new leader takes office that the president of the united states doesn't seem to understand how important that personal relationship is and didn't bother to call the president of libya when he was sworn into office earlier this summer. bill: one more thing. i just want to make this quick. i don't mean to cut you off but in interest of time here, where does this go, if anywh

away. why romney has to win and why obama can't afford to lose. i'll talk to my political a-team. also, bibi and the bomb. >> a red line should be drawn right here. >> after dropping this on the u.n. yesterday, he talks to obama and romney today. what israel's line in the sand would mean for all of us. plus, have you seen chelsea lately? >> nobody knows what the hell they're getting into when they're running for president. >> one of my favorites guests is back. >> i'm single, yes. >> if men are watching this -- >> yeah, i'm available. you know, just call me maybe. >> funny, feisty as ever, with a new look for her talk show. this is "piers morgan tonight." >>> good evening. the big story, the great debate. in just five days the event that could change the race for the white house permanently. the clock is ticking and the candidates know it. they meet face-to-face on wednesday. this weekend, both will be locked behind closed doors in practice sparring sessions. romney has listed senator rob portman to prep him while obama is working with senator john kerry. latest polls covered with that

it, what he had accomplished in massachusetts, how can mitt romney talk for five minutes on health care, even like 90 seconds without saying something that contradicts something he said the week before, the month before, that gets the base upset, that is confusing, that reporters can't quite understand? i don't know how he does it. he's tied himself into knots on this particular question. on the other side, i do know some obama aides who are a little worried that the president, who sometimes can be overly professorial, may use the time not to his advantage either. they'd like to see more succinct answers. they each have the opposite issue to deal with. how romney can speak coherently about health care in a way that's convincing and obama doesn't go too far down the debate. >> i think he's going to get through this on sheer unadulterated memory. what we saw on "60 minutes" seemed like opening arguments. scott pelley interviewed mitt romney, and steve krupp interviewed president obama. take a look at their competing visions for the government, what we should be doing in the federal g

for jobs. jan crawford and nancy cordes with the president at the romney in ohio promoting free trade. jeff glor on the call that every football fan is talking about. >> it was awful. that's all i'm going to say about it. >> pelley: and these images helped change america. >> how could you not ask the question "what ever happened to that kid?" >> pelley: seth doane with the man who uncovered the stories behind the faces. captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> pelley: good evening. six weeks before an election that may turn on the state of the economy, a new survey out today finds that americans are feeling better about things. consumer confidence is at its highest level in seven months, largely because more americans expect the jobs picture to improve. but confidence is still at what's considered a weak level. home values are increasing. another report out today says prices in 20 major cities rose 1.6% in july. that's the fourth straight increase. but prices are still 30% below where they were before the housing bubble burst. stock portfolios are loo

thing is governor romney should have been talking like this from the beginning. as soon as he won the primaries, he should have moved to the middle, talked about his health care plan. he's right about his health care plan. it's a terrific thing that every child in massachusetts is covered by health insurance. i tried very hard and came close in pennsylvania. that's a terrific thing, and it does show empathy for children and people too poor to afford health care. he should have pivots and gone that way in june. it's too late now and too transparent. all those words you used, how many would have been in ads in the romney cap pampaign if the tape hadn't come out. >> the basic question is did the republicans nominate the wrong guy? i'm not asking about gingrich, santorum and all the ones that ran in the primaries. i think clearly romney is a cut above them. we have some new polling evidence this week about the particular struggles that romney is having with middle class and working class voters on basically the question of can he identify with struggles, do you think he identifies wit

romney mentioned it on leno and we will talk that about later on the show. i will say in times of duress, i always go straight to camera, after the break, as both campaigns barnstorm and blanket the air waves in battleground states, one factor that could make six weeks largely irrelevant and could spell trouble for governor romney. >> i think a loyal republican says the house is on fire, and time is running out, if we want to save this house, we better do it now. guess what? time is running out. you know when early voting starts in ohio. in less than a week. i was saying last week, 45 days, there aren't really 45 days left. they got to turn this thing around or they lose. >> team romney's hunt for a red october next on "now." bob... oh, hey alex. just picking up some, brochures, posters copies of my acceptance speech. great! it's always good to have a backup plan, in case i get hit by a meteor. wow, your hair looks great. didn't realize they did photoshop here. hey, good call on those mugs. can't let 'em see what you're drinking. you know, i'm glad we're both running a nice, clean race.

this bit of mitt romney talking about the emergency landing last week that at a time was carrying his wife ann romney. >> i appreciate the fact that she is on the ground safe and sound. [applause] and i don't think she knows how worried some of us were. when you have a fire in an aircraft, there is no place to go exactly. and you can't find any oxygen to get in the aircraft. the windows don't open. i don't know why they don't do that. about it's a real problem. >> it's a real problem that the windows don't roll down onaire planes. is it also a problem that guns don't shoot backwards and diving boards are only built over deep water? i don't think he was joking. you can't joke about your wife almost being in a plane crash. megyn: joining me is nina easton. and bill mcbern. let me start with you. you are married to a senior adviser to the romney campaign but you have a long history as a straight news jltd. rachael maddow is not a straight news journalist. take a look at "huffington post." they write, mitt romney wonders why anne romney's airplane windows don't roll down. yahoo, why plane wind

was his wife ann romney. we were talking about this during the break. on jay leno last night asked about comments she made regarding the press and asking them to stop it. let's he what she had say ike seeing you get mad. did you get feedback? did you have focus people go, that's wrong? >> no. i stepped out of the interview like oh, dear, did i say it a little strong? no. everyo i've seen is like giving me high ve wha do you make of ann romney as a surrogate at this point in terms of burnishing her husband's brand? >> we hear early on as you said the mitt stabilizer, humanizing him, but i think maybe mitt was rit wn h ,t t fund-raiser that we're using ann sparingly so people don't get tired of her. because i think -- i'm not sure how well she's wearing, you know, anger, be it's very understandable, any political spouse has good reason to feel angry beust'sard t h ose ndac on someone you love. definitely. and yet, it's not that appealing. it isn't just ann romney. i mean when bill clinton got angry on hillary's behalf, didn't work thatwell. when teresa heinz told a reporter to shove , not

, is meaningful and is consequential. what should mitt romney do? he should really be more deft in talk about his life story. for some reason, he shied away from that, whether it's the role that faith has had in his life and certainly the production that he oversaw at bain capital and other places. this man helped create actual businesses and by extension, he says thousands of jobs. i take him at his word, at places like sports authority, best buy, staples. these are everyday household names. he ought to be willing to do that. i also think he has to show a little leg and go on the offense against president obama which is my entire point about making this -- putting the president on the defensive and letting him explain his record because obama '08 no longer exists. those debates were great for him because he can run on promises, he can make people feel hopeful. he now has to run on his record. >> i agree with this. jennifer granholm, when i watched the convention speeches for the democratic convention, i thought that bill clinton made a mesmerizing speech, brilliant both in the rhetoric and the d

of the marriott hotel chain said the campaign was wonderful. story after story talking about mitt romney's mormonism, the family who had a premature daughter who had premature complications. and the 14-year-old dying boy who befriended mitt romney and had mitt romney write his will. >> the next time mitt went to the hospital he was equipped with a yellow legal. and pen. together they made david's will. that is a task that no child should ever have to do. but it gave david peace of mind. so after david's death we were able to give his skateboard, his model rockets and fishing gear to his best friends. >> reporter: we have contacted the romney campaign. so far no comment. the mormon church also has not commented about harry reid's comments. megyn: right after this break frank luntz is going to be here. he's the author of "words that work." we are going to ask him if this is a calculated attack meant to put mormonism front and center in the campaign. and more on the president's decision to appear on "the view" today while not meeting with any of the world leaders coming to the united nation

about the economy is laughable. the problem with the romney campaign is not that they don't talk about the economy. they don't talk about their policies. it's the american people aren't buying it. they do not want to go back -- um not sure what it takes for the romney campaign to observe this revelation. but they do not want to go back to the same policies that created this mess. that is the fundamental problem with the romney campaign. you cannot keep selling what people do not want to buy. >> okay, you know what? jonathan. i want to throw this at you. newt gingrich was on "morning joe" this morning and he was talking about what romney needs to do in the debates. here was his answer. >> what advice would you give to barack obama? >> call bill clinton every morning. >> how did bill clinton get to be such a major player in this election? >> bill clinton? >> yeah. >> one, he's a former democratic president. two, a former two-term democratic president, and also a president who led the country at a time of peace and prosperity. when he left office, only the sky was the limit to what this c

.1%. outside dayton, romney also talked about how his plan to pursue new trade agreements will help people in the state. >> the people in ohio can sell products anywhere in the world, and we can compete with anywhere in the world. i'm not afraid of trading with other nations. i understand that when we trade and when other nations trade on a fair basis we will complete, we will win, we'll raise wages here, we'll create jobs. >> reporter: with the election possibly in the balance in ohio, both sides are campaigning hard. both candidates have been here 13 times this year and they will both be here tomorrow. >> here in ohio we're not better off under president obama. >> reporter: they're also flooding the airwaves with television ads. >> romney's never stood up to china. >> reporter: they spent more money here than any other battleground state. since may, the president and the outside groups supporting his campaign have spent $47.9 million. $40.6 million by the campaign and more than $7 million by the outside groups. that's more than romney's team, which has spent $43 million on ads in ohio, $

to talk about specifics, look at what president obama said. >> talk about mr. romney. if you're going to talk about the president, we will have to close the discussion now, but if you're -- >> this is a martin game here, of course. let's not beat up on the president -- >> we're just talking about mr. romney. >> the fact of the matter is what i said at the outseth still stands. i think it's about a vision of where you want to take the country and how you want to move forward. as it relates to his tax plan, he has said very clearly that, a, he wants to cut certain tax loopholes, b, he wants to keep the bush era tax cut rates in place, and c, we need to make sure we can work with congress in a bipartisan fashion to get it done. i think that's very fair, i think it's a question that will be asked of him tomorrow by jim lehrer. >> it's also been deemed as mathematically impossible. thank you. as the candidates gear up, we are headed to denver. we will broadcast live from the university of denver, so be sure to tune in tomorrow, 4:00 p.m. eastern. >>> next, the 47 and bain. sure to take cen

the media is saying. we've talked before about the romney campaign being very closed to media. being very disciplined. doing things their way. we all sometimes question it. and some of us more loudly than others. and they seem to stay on their own trajectory. >> didn't the libya sort of let's call it a gaffe, maybe agree on that, isn't that a response to like they're saying all this bad stuff, i didn't talk about afghanistan, wasn't strong enough at the convention, now i have to do something? >> i don't know that was so much a response to the media as it was, an opportunity they wanted to seize on. i don't think they did it right. but it was an opportunity they wanted to seize on. they were probably waiting for that opportunity to come for weeks and it happened to come then and they jumped on it. >> and i would say that's right. it's less of a jumping on the particular media narrative and more of looking for any opportunity of the president making any sort of misstep that they can jump on. they have changed directions, they went with the welfare ads for a while and then jumped on you didn

, when governor romney held a slight edge. joining me now to talk about it with his take, stephen hayes, columnist for "the weekly standard." so since the convention, steven, you know the president has increased his overall lead by five points, yet huge numbers of likely voters, want to show you this, 73%, think that many policies need to change. how is it possible, i mean that's a big number, 73%. how is it possible that an incumbent leads when so many voters want change? >> isn't that an absolutely fascinating result? putting those two poll numbers up against one another. i think explained by basically two factors. one, the president still has an advantage at likeability question. you know, one of these things that is hard to test and there are reasons, reasons that we don't entirely understand, that voters choose one candidate over another but in poll after poll, president obama, still has an advantage over mitt romney on the basic question of likeability. the second it seems to me is that for whatever reason voters do not yet have a clear understanding of how exactly mitt romney wou

in every campaign i've ever covered, the press will talk about process particularly polls. mitt romney, conservatives are waiting for him to be big in events, big in message, big in personality. it seems like right now the campaign is waiting for him to do that in the debates. >> mark, you know why they focus on process, because there's not substance to -- you know, it's funny, in 1988 facing a more hostile press george h.w. bush never once whined about process. you know why? because james baker told the press what they were going to be following. and he told the candidate what he was going to be doing. and every week the candidate did it. the message was unbelievable. but again, going on with charles krauthammer, for six months mitt has been matching obama small ball for small ball. a hit-and-run critique here. this is important. a hit-and-run critique here, a slogan of the week there. that's what we've been saying. sam stein, there is no over arching message, no reagan message, no thatcher message, no george h.w. bush message in 1988. it's small ball. you have a libyan embassy blow u

are going come from, talk about the entitlement reforms. talk about how, in fact, it's mitt romney mean-testing entitlement reforms. he's talking about returning benefits to seniors and others that don't make as much money, which is benefit redistribution. >> well, i want to -- a lot of times when you look at where a campaign is, you can tell by how the money is moving. it was somethinging that the billionaire democrat has decided to give a million bucks it to a pro-obama super-pac including another half million for congressional races. before that he didn't think he wanted to do that or get involved. is he seeing a shift, and it's time to back the winning horse? do you watch the money and stay that gives me the indication of the mood out there? >> of course. in politics you always follow the money, and that's a great example. george has seen the poker hand. he sees that obama is holding three aces and romney is trying to drive to an inside straight. he's putting his money on the table now. >> do you think that similarly the republican money is going to start to dry up, or will you see

romney elected. romney of course has been talking down the economy because that's good for him. let's talk about that. >> yeah. that's a major complication. jim mengsed in his piece. the unemployment rate in ohio is 7.1%, in columbus it's about 6%. that's a bellwether area. stop after stop john kasich goes around the state and says ohio is booming, ohio is rocking. that gives headaches to people in washington saying hey, this conflicts with our message. there's ongoing friction and there has been for months between the romney campaign and their staff on the ground and the kasich people. it hasn't spilled into public view, but the article on the web you have one saying on the record, mitt romney fix your message in ohio. things are good here. you should take a lesson from john kasich. that's pretty aggressive. >> the ground game is fascinating because everybody says he has a good ground game there, but he's still being sort of outpaced by the obama campaign in a lot of ways, correct? >> yeah. the obama campaign in ohio almost their model for their grass roots effort around the state.

soon, governor romney would be a drag on the ticket. i talked to a veteran republican, former state party chairman, he says, yes, people are voicing those concerns, but be calm. governor romney has time. >> clearly if a candidate loses by more than five, it starts to affect balance. that's a big issue for republicans. but the way i look at it, we're starting the fourth quarter, we have a strong quarterback. and anybody that knows football knows that fourth quarter's when most of the action happens. so october will be big. and if romney has a good start to the month, we'll be fine. >> reporter: you hear him say october will be big. that starts the month. that would be the first debate, wolf, on october 3rd. republicans say this is overblown. doesn't matter if they vote early or election day. but look at the request for early mail-in democrats have a five-to-one advantage. in the county where i'm in, more than half the votes were cast early last election. that's where most of the students are. fascinating to watch. one thing republicans are worried about as this early voting opens, th

. what is governor romney doing there today. >> easy peering at the american legion hall talking to veterans and get the support of 42 medal of horn recipients and he'll talking about the effect of looming sequestration and defense cuts in virginia. the military is all across this air, in the washington area and no fork area. it is estimated that the sequestration defense cuts could result in the loss of as many as 65,000 jobs in small businesses related to the defense industry. this election campaign continues to be all about ohio and the jobs. governor romney is saying he is the one best positioned to help out the middle class, obama hammering romney for a lack of detail in his economic and tax plan, have a listen. >> no matter how many times they try to tell you they are going to start talking specifics really soon, they don't do it. and the reason is because the math doesn't work. >> the american family, middle income families are having a hard time. look, i know the president cares about america and the people of this country, he just doesn't know how to help them, i do. i'l

mit mitt romney anticipates team talk about quite a bit. martha: i think it will come up in the debates at all. it's an optimal moment for mitt romney to ask him why he wouldn't do that and something that you pointed out to go on the view over the course of this week. israel is the main focus of the meeting that was not taken with benjamin netanyahu this web. clearly it demonstrates that there is some strain there, does it not? >> yes. i mean there is no question. look, we've been hearing all along happy talk from the political leaders of each of the nations. the fact of the matter is this. there is reasonable relationship between military to military folks. there is a decent relationship on the intelligence side of things, political relationship is in at that tim tatters. it has been for a longtime. there have been meetings between senior israeli and american officials where curs words have been said. the president sought to isolate israel and change his approach to this part of the world. that with us a policy decision. you have people who agree with the president and w

thus far on style, on likability, so romney -- romney, what, needs to talk about his family, your words. let me quote you, you say yes, he's tried to do that many, many times before, but there is always hoping that this time it will work. why will it work this time? >> it might work because more people are watching. when he talked about it during the convention, the ratings were really very, very low on that. and he had to share the platform with everyone else. with christie and with rubio. this time around it is him versus the president. and this is his chance to throw out some relatable points, to say things like i'm in public service because of my father. i want to improve the country because of my family. i think if he can throw one or two pointsike that, he can turn it around. but don't expect him to start crying. his not that guy. he shouldn't pretend to be that guy. he shouldn't pretend to be ronald reagan because he's not ronald reagan. he should simply run on his credentials and experience. and that's what he'll mostly try to do. >> as you point out, not take newt gingrich's ad

going on for several days now. i think you also sort of heard mitt romney downplay some of the talk that has been going on since the new york times reported over the weekend that, you know, mitt romney is preparing all the zingers for the debate and you heard people saying maybe he's not preparing zingers. a lot of this is the head fake to the head fake to the head fake. of course, mitt romney and the president are both probably working on lines of attack that they'll deliver at this debate. that is sort of standard operating procedure. you saw that scott brown, elizabeth warren debate last night in massachusetts. this is what campaigns do. this is what candidates do. but i will tell you that mitt romney has been behind closed doors for much of the day today, in debate preparations, brooke, with the sparring partner, ohio senator rob portman. and perhaps the day's most notable development in the day with not very many development is that they just stopped for lunch at chipotle. they put a wrap if you don't mind the pun, on the morning debate session. i'm sorry. i had to do it. >> pu

talking about it for months. until now. this week, mitt romney himself finally forced to address it. e idhaenine other day, you said fool people with his ads and his speeches about your record. but fact checkers have also taken issue with your ads. haven't you also played fast and loose with the facts from time to time? >> we've been absolutely spot-on. and anytime there's anything that'seen misswere itre i >> hmm. what he's describing there, removing or correcting false claims made by the campaign once you realize they are false, that is a process that a normal campaign does follow. that's what makes is statement so newsworthy. because the romney campan hasn't been doing th. theyaven brengir e msm re once they're proven to be false. which is a strange decision for a campaign operating at the presidential election. look at one of the first general election ads released by the romney campaign. this was released back in november of last year. >> provide relief for homeowners. it's going to take a new direction. if we keep talking about the economy,e're going tlose. >> "if we keep talking

the election. early voting begins next tuesday. listen to governor romney. >> a lot of people can talk. talk is cheap. you can be eloquent and describe the wonderful things you can do. but when you cut through the words you can look at the record. and you can see the jobs that america needs and you know it is time to choose a new leader and get a coach and get america growing again. >> the polls the new "new york times" cbs poll has president obama with a nine point lead. the 12 point lead over mitt romney romney. how bad is this for the romney campaign? he is a genius behind the 538 blog. welcome, you are a genius. you have an extraordinary grasp. with this book, the of just question to you, 41 day to go, who is going to win? >> we have a think like a gambleler and we have an 80% favorite. that number has been going up. we actually had it first begin to peak after the conventions but since romney's 47% comments we have his 47% win. you talked about the polls are maybe some of the best numbers we have seen for obama in any state that we have seen. almost all of the swing states that you have

asking why not, a lot. chase sapphire preferred. there's more to enjoy. >>> the mitt romney for president campaign yesterday finally addressed something that we on this show have been talking about for months. something we first raised back in november. we have been hoping for the romney campaign to address this issue ever since then, but they've just been able to avoid talking about it for months. until now. this week, mitt romney himself finally forced to address it. >> just the other day, you said the president has been trying to fool people with his ads and his speeches about your record. but fact checkers have also taken issue with your ads. haven't you also played fast and loose with the facts from time to time? >> we've been absolutely spot-on. and anytime there's anything that's been a miss, we correct it or remove it. >> hmm. what he's describing there, removing or correcting false claims made by the campaign once you realize they are false, that is a process that a normal campaign does follow. that's what makes this statement so newsworthy. because the romney campaign hasn't bee

we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose." >> so the romney ad tried to make it sound like president obama said this thing that he was quoting someone else saying, and he was quoting it to say that he disagreed with that statement. i mean, there are lots of little lies in politics, little exaggerations, but that's really big, really bad lie. and it was their first ad against president obama. and so, naturally, mitt romney got skewered for this, for building his first general election ad on a really obviously blunt lie. what did the romney campaign do about the whopper in that ad? did they correct it or remove as mitt romney now says has always been his campaign policy? no, they didn't it. that ad is still up on his campaign web page. not only did the romney campaign did not remove or correct that ad, romney defended it just as it was getting all attention for being a lie, remember? >> there was no hidden effort on the part of our campaign. it was instead to point out what's sauce for the goose is now sauce for the gander. >> sauces and gooses, whatever. but mitt romney

change. but i thought climate change was a myth? >> well, depending on which mitt romney you're talking to, he would or would not agree with your last statement. but, you know, to give specifics on lyme disease but not give specifics on exactly what he wants to do about climate change, exactly what he wants to do about the debt and deficits, exactly what -- how he's going to achieve this balanced budget and his tax reform and everything, it does seem a little small to focus on lyme disease. i mean, this takes microtargeting to a whole new level. i mean, who knew? >> anna marie, we read in politico today there's a rift within the romney camp about how much to push foreign policy issues. the story says, and i'm quoting, the truth is that romney now finds himself besieged with conflicting advice. i guess that's not the best way to approach a debate, is it? >> no, but, of course, we know there's a rift within romney. you know, as jonathan sort of pointed out, he has conflicting views of himself within himself so it's not surprising his campaign would sort of reflect that. campaigns sort of

night. let me start off with you. ann, you're the journalist. romney was at a rally yesterday, and he started to talk about the keystone pipeline, that kind of red meat that gets the conservative crowd going. but away from the rallies in a recent string of interviews, he's embracing obama care, and now this issue regarding the executive order for young people in this country through no fault of their own allowing them to remain here for two years. >> he's no dummy, and the romney campaign isn't under illusions that people at the rally can't also read the newspaper the next day and see what he said in different settings. i think they're trying to do something candidates often do, which is in a set where you have a lot of more conservative supporters and base, you try to rally them. you try on to reach out to independents and the center. the real question is why he didn't try to do that sooner, maybe shortly after the convention or after he locked up the nomination, which is when that takes place. whether he can reach the ears of moderates who might want to hear that on immigration is t

people care more about the economy. i think governor romney has an obligation to talk about foreign policy, though. and the linkage is what i still think is their strongest case. why do you think the next four years would be any different than the last four years? primarily they've got to make that argument on the economy. i think making it on the arab spring and ton the middle east s not a bad political line. >> we'll get to the polls in just a second. i'll try this on you, john, do you think hearing paul ryan talk about president obama's foreign policy is going to move people from obama to romney? >> i'm not -- i don't think paul ryan matters very much, certainly on a foreign policy story. >> do you think it worked? >> i think there's a sequence of things that's going to happen here. this links up the first two. mitt romney has a paramount goal. he must get past this first debate and still have life in this campaign. if he can get through that first debate and as mark was saying earlier, convince republicans that he's still in the race, not have his fund-raising dry up, not have a

good to be the tough dynamic for mitt romney. he's going to talk about the economy. romney had said the unemployment rate would go to 6% nationwide. he has to make the case, don't just be satisfied with a mediocre economy, it can and should get better. both of these guys are not going to be taking ohio for granted. arthel: is ohio like a life boat for governor romney that will bring him to a sink or swim come know it will be a tough situation for him to bash the president's economic policies when you have a 7.2% unemployment rate there. the president is going to say, hey, you can go ahead and attack me on my trade policies with china, but it doesn't matter because remember, i am the person who brought about more cases against china in my first term as opposed to president george w. bush did in his two terms in office. >> yeah, i think that romney is going to throw deep a little bit because he is behind and take some chances. there is a china currency bill. china bashing on the campaign trail always works. there is a china currency bill that came out of the senate, bipartisan support
